Renting a Car Without an Airline ID, or for Family and Friends

The crew rate needs an airline ID at pickup and the ID holder has to be the main driver, so it cannot be used for a car your family or friends collect on their own. Our worldwide comparison page is open to everyone, with no ID and no membership.

The Crew

Why the crew rate cannot travel without you
The crew rate is personal. The counter wants to see the airline or airport ID of the main driver, and that person has to be present at pickup. Send a friend or a parent to collect the car on their own and the desk will turn them away, which is not the phone call anyone wants on holiday.
The route that works for everyone
Our worldwide car rental comparison page runs on DiscoverCars and compares suppliers openly for your dates. No airline ID, no membership, and no login. The booking is fully theirs, in their own name, with their own confirmation.
When to use which
  • You are renting, with your airline ID, in the United States: use the Alamo crew rate page.
  • Someone outside aviation is renting: send them the worldwide comparison page.
  • You are renting outside the United States: the comparison page is usually the better start.
  • Your partner or family travel with you and you are the main driver: the crew rate still applies.
Family in your car is fine
There is no problem taking your partner or your children along on a crew rate booking. You stay the main driver, and a partner can normally be added as an extra driver at the counter with their licence in hand. Many locations charge per day for that, so ask rather than assume.
What they should check before paying
  • A credit card in the name of the main driver, since debit cards are often refused.
  • The fuel policy, where full to full is nearly always the cheapest option.
  • The mileage terms, because unlimited is common but not universal.
  • The young driver surcharge if the driver is under the usual age threshold.
More of the small print is set out in our car rental tips and tricks.
How we keep this free
Some links on our site lead to partners who pay us a commission when a booking comes through. It costs you nothing extra and the rate you see is the rate you get.
Your next step
Forward the worldwide comparison page to whoever is renting, and save it yourself too. Keep the Alamo crew rate page bookmarked next to it, so you always have both routes one tap away.
