The short answer
A travel eSIM can provide mobile data abroad on a compatible, unlocked device. Activation, coverage, validity and home-line behaviour depend on your device and plan. Follow your provider’s setup instructions and check charges before travel.
Our current picks for crew sit on the crew eSIM comparison page, together with whatever the offer of the moment is. We keep the details there rather than here, because connectivity offers change quickly and a help centre article ages badly.
How a travel eSIM works
Install and test the eSIM at home, not in the boarding queue. Take a screenshot of your activation details so you are not dependent on your inbox. Keep the airline app and your roster tool downloaded and logged in before departure, because the moment you actually need them is rarely the moment you have signal.
More of that sort of thing sits in our crew apps page and in our guide to travel tools for airline crew.
Do I need a code or a membership?
Public ACD pages can help you compare options. The eSIM provider sets its purchase, account, identification and activation requirements. Check the selected offer; do not assume that every provider uses the same process or accepts a particular staff ID.
Some of the links on our site are affiliate links, so we may earn a commission when you buy through one, at no extra cost to you. The formal wording sits on our disclaimer page.
Your next step
Open the crew eSIM comparison page, check the current offer against the list above, and save the link. Sorting connectivity the evening before a trip is a lot calmer than sorting it in an arrivals hall.

How a travel eSIM works
- An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone, so there is no plastic card and nothing to lose in a hotel room.
- You install the plan by scanning a code or through the provider app, ideally while you still have decent wifi at home.
- On supported devices, you may keep your primary line active alongside a travel eSIM. Check whether calls and messages will work as intended and what your home provider charges.
- Select the intended data line and roaming settings using your provider’s instructions. Using a travel eSIM does not by itself prevent charges on your primary line.
- Does your handset support eSIM? Most recent phones do, older ones and some regional models do not. Check the model before anything else.
- Is the phone carrier locked? A locked handset can refuse an eSIM even when the hardware supports it.
- Does the plan cover your whole route? Regional plans are convenient, but check that your turnaround and your night stop are both inside the coverage area.
- Validity period. Plans expire, and a plan that runs out mid rotation is no help at all.
- Data only or a number too? Many travel plans are data only. If you need to receive a text from a local contact, check that before you land.
- Top up route. Running out on a long trip is normal. Know how you add more before you need it.
