- Many countries accept a national licence from a major market. Others want an International Driving Permit alongside it, especially where your licence is not in Latin script.
- You arrange the permit through your own licensing authority at home, so sort it before you fly. No counter abroad can issue one for you.
- Most counters want a credit card in the name of the main driver, plus your airline ID for the crew rate.
- Your partner can usually be added as an extra driver at the desk with their licence in hand. Many locations charge per day for it, so ask rather than assume.
- Confirm which side of the road you are driving on and where the indicator stalk is.
- Check the fuel type on the filler cap. Misfueling is expensive and generally not covered.
- Photograph the car from all sides, the dashboard, and the fuel gauge, and check the damage sheet before you sign.
- Note the fuel policy. Full to full is nearly always the cheapest option.
- Set up navigation while you are still parked.
