Driving Abroad as Crew: Licences, Permits, Tolls, and Zones

Two things decide whether a rental abroad goes smoothly: booking it the right way, and knowing the local rules before you turn the key. Book from our own Alamo crew rate page first, because the crew rate rides on that link, and then work through the checklist below.
Book it so the crew rate actually sticks
Start on the ACD Alamo page and follow the current booking instructions. Review the selected offer for eligibility, accepted documents, verification steps and the total price before booking.
Alamo, Enterprise, and National belong to the same parent company, and the crew rate is set up on the Alamo side. So if you were hunting for an Enterprise or National staff code, book on the Alamo side instead. Hertz does have an airline staff rate as well, and where we list it the details sit on our own Hertz deal page rather than in an article, because that route can change. We still point crew to Alamo first, since that is the dedicated crew arrangement. Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Dollar, and Thrifty are not brands we can put a crew rate on. Licence and permit
Crossing a border usually needs permission from the supplier, insurance cover for the country you enter, and sometimes a border document with a fee. Some countries are excluded outright. Declare it when you book and never just drive across and hope.
Tolls and city or emission zone charges follow the car. Either take the transponder or pass at the counter, or register and pay online yourself before you drive in. Fines reach the supplier months later and get billed on to you with an administration fee, so keep your receipts.
Insurance and the counter upsell
CDW is the damage waiver that caps what you owe if the car is damaged. Whether CDW is included depends on the location and the selected rate. Check the inclusions, exclusions and any excess shown for your booking; do not assume that it is included because you are renting in the United States. - Many countries accept a national licence from a major market. Others want an International Driving Permit alongside it, especially where your licence is not in Latin script.
- You arrange the permit through your own licensing authority at home, so sort it before you fly. No counter abroad can issue one for you.
- Check the selected offer’s driving-licence, payment-card, deposit and employment-evidence requirements; the provider and location determine what is accepted.
- Check whether an additional driver is allowed, who must be present, which documents are required and any charge before adding them.
- Confirm which side of the road you are driving on and where the indicator stalk is.
- Check the fuel type on the filler cap. Misfueling is expensive and generally not covered.
- Photograph the car from all sides, the dashboard, and the fuel gauge, and check the damage sheet before you sign.
- Note the fuel policy. Full to full is nearly always the cheapest option.
- Set up navigation while you are still parked.
